HCB SPECIALIZED PAEDIATRICS UNIT

HCB SPECIALIZED PAEDIATRICS UNIT

HCB Hospitales has created the Specialized Paediatrics Unit to comprehensively cover the health and well-being needs of the whole family. HCB joins in this project a team of paediatricians specialized in the care of children.

The HCB Specialized Paediatric Unit was created and grows to respond to both general paediatric needs and more complex needs in which specialized professionals must intervene. HCB therefore offers a team of children’s specialists and medical services aimed at children from 0 to 15 years of age.

The paediatric patient ranges from birth to 14 years and 364 days (15 years old). They are also classified according to age in:

Neonate, new-born: from birth to one month of life.

Infant: from one month of life to 23 months.

Preschool: from 2 years to 5 years.

School: from 6 to 11 years old.

Adolescent: from 12 to 14 years old.

In the HCB Specialized Paediatrics Unit, we actively work as a paediatric-nursing/nursing-paediatrics team in the following services and treatments:

PAEDIATRICS CONSULTATION

It is the type of care intended for patients who come for any pathology or health problem.

PAEDIATRICS URGENT CONSULTATION

These are the consultations that are carried out without an appointment, the patient comes because they require urgent attention due to acute pathology.

SPATIALITY CONSULTATIONS: CHILDREN’S ENDOCRINE, CHILDREN’S CARDIOLOGY AND NEUROPEDIATRICS

Child endocrine. In the paediatric endocrinology consultation we carry out the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of possible hormonal disorders in paediatric patients. Some of the disorders we treat include, among others:

  • Growth problems, such as short stature or tall stature.
  • Premature, early or late puberty.
  • Enlargement of the thyroid (goiter).
  • Alterations in the function of the thyroid gland (hyper/hypothyroidism).
  • Alterations in the function of the adrenal gland.
  • Alterations in the genitals.
  • Ovarian and testicular dysfunction.
  • Diabetes.
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia).
  • Obesity.
  • Problems with Vitamin D/calcium/phosphorus (rickets, hypocalcaemia).

Paediatric Cardiology: in the paediatric cardiology consultation we carry out the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of possible cardiovascular pathologies in paediatric patients: murmurs identified by another professional, palpitations, chest pain, syncope or dizziness… Asymptomatic patients who have relatives with diseases of the heart are also studied as they can be hereditary. In the consultation we do the following:

  • Detailed anamnesis asking about the nature of the problem and the family and personal history.
  • Physical examination where the patient is listened to and pulses are taken. Blood pressure and oxygen saturation will be taken if necessary
  • 12-lead electrocardiogram.
  • COLOUR DOPPLER and TWODIMENSIONAL MODE echocardiography.

Neuropaediatrics: in the Neuropaediatrics consultation we carry out the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of possible pathologies that involve the nervous system in paediatric patients. Among others we deal with the following pathologies:

  • Attention deficit disorder with / without hyperactivity.
  • Developmental delays, global and motor.
  • Language disorders.
  • Epileptic seizures (absences, convulsions, etc.) with or without fever.
  • Intellectual retardation or disability.
  • School learning disorders.
  • Headaches.
  • Diagnosis of low or high performance autism or the so-called “Asperger’s syndrome”.
  • Brain malformation diagnosis.

This is the program for systematic child health reviews. When carrying out health checks on children, we are governed by the child health program established in the Valencian Community, although health checks are carried out in our service whenever the parents wish.

It is recommended to carry out the first check-up between the fifth and tenth day after birth, if there were no problems during delivery or in the first days after birth.

If no problem is detected, after the first visit it is recommended to have monthly check-ups during the first 12 months. After the first year of life, it is recommended to carry out the review every three months. Later, from the second to the fifth year of the child’s life, it is recommended to visit the paediatrician every six months. From the age of 5, an annual check-up is recommended.

In these health check-ups, somatometry is performed on the child to control growth, follow-up of developmental milestones, vaccines corresponding to age are administered, doubts and concerns of the parents are resolved, recommendations are given regarding the development, feeding… Possible health problems are detected.

This is the attention destined to the prevention and promotion of health, EDUCATION FOR HEALTH. The parents are informed of the next visit to be made and which vaccines will correspond to the patient. The vaccination schedule is explained and which vaccines are funded and which are not. In these programs we also deal with the updating of the vaccines of foreign patients and their comparison with the vaccination calendar of the Valencian Community.

Additionally, in these visits we carry out the certificates required by schools and institutes in the enrolment of children.

This is the consultation intended for patients who only require the attention of the nurse:

  • Blood extraction in paediatric patients
  • Carrying out the detection test for hearing loss in new-borns (otoacoustic emissions)
  • Already prescribed vaccines are administered
  • Administration of previously prescribed chronic medication (hormonal treatments)
  • Monitoring of cures
  • Monthly immunotherapy

Whenever necessary or required, an assessment will be requested by the doctor/paediatrician.

OBSERVATION BOX

In the Unit we have a BOX equipped with a paediatric bed that we use if a patient requires observation time due to their pathology or to keep them on hold if they need to be transferred to another hospital for admission. Here the necessary treatment is carried out: monitoring of vital signs, administration of medication, techniques, etc.
