The HCB Benidorm hospital has been accredited for the second consecutive time with the most prestigious and demanding international health quality certificate in the world, the Joint Commission International (JCI), achieved for the first time in 2021.
After a new audit, and thanks to the involvement and Safety culture of the entire organization, HCB Benidorm has reached a new milestone: it is the first and only private hospital in the Valencian Community to obtain this prestigious recognition and reaccredit it consecutively.
The CEO of HCB Hospitales, Dr. Ana Paz, has highlighted that “if obtaining it for the first time is complicated, maintaining it is even more so. The audit no longer only seeks the perfect implementation of all its standards, but also hopes to see the spirit of the Joint Commission model throughout the organization. And that is what we have been achieving little by little, that this model of excellent health care permeates all the staff and they transmit it to our patients.”
Why JCI is important for a hospital
JCI is for HCB, and any health organization in the world, a differentiating element due to the level of demand of its Quality standards – more than 1,200 – and the exhaustiveness with which they are reviewed every three years; passing is only possible if a score of 9.8 (out of 10) is achieved in all standards.
Basing health care on a model like this allows us to stand out for patient orientation and excellence; In fact, the Quality and Patient Safety standards required by this health certification consolidate HCB Benidorm in the world’s elite of hospitals. Since 2021, HCB Benidorm follows the same healthcare model as the Mayo Clinic and the Monte Sinaí Hospital, in the USA; the Navarra University Clinic or the Teknon Barcelona.
Dr. Ana Paz, faithful defender of this model of excellent healthcare, explained that “the gold seal accredits HCB Benidorm’s commitment to the continuous improvement of Quality and Patient Safety and, in general, the commitment to HCB for a healthcare model different from other private hospitals. In short, better and safer healthcare for our patients and greater security for our staff.”
The most demanding health quality audit
Last week, a team of evaluators from the Chicago-based Joint Commission International organization (among which, exceptionally, were two of its senior management officials to evaluate the process) analysed almost 1,300 Quality and Safety of Health Care standards throughout the hospital and polyclinic area of HCB Benidorm.
After four days of evaluations, the team ruled that HCB Benidorm had passed all evaluable points. They sent their compliance report to Chicago, where a JCI commission has confirmed the reaccreditation.
What is Joint Commission International?
The Joint Commission International (JCI) is the most prestigious and demanding international accreditor of hospitals and health organizations in terms of Safety and Quality in patient care worldwide.
Hospitals that have declared their commitment to quality and patient safety voluntarily undergo an intense review process, conducted by JCI evaluators, who review compliance with hospital standards related to various areas, including international safety goals of the patient, patient evaluation and care, anaesthesia and surgical care, safe management and use of medications, patient and family education, quality improvement, infection prevention and control, among others.
