Eyesight is probably the most precious of the human senses and at HCB we are aware of this and so we offer a complete Ophthalmology service in the hospital.<\/span><\/p>

The work of this unit is aimed at improving day by day and collaborating in scientific research and participating on national and international congresses in order to apply the advances in Ophthalmology to our patients.<\/span><\/p>

The human eye can suffer refractive defects which cause blurred vision and these are Short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism.<\/span><\/p>

In order to allow the patients to see clearly it is necessary to focus the images on the retina, and this can be achieved with glasses, contact lenses or with REFRACTIVE SURGERY.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

LASIK is a quick and safe procedure which is carried out under topical anaesthetic (anaesthetic eye-drops) and there is no need for hospitalization. It is the most advanced and safe technique for correcting refractive defects and is done using an extra-ocular technique (we work on the outside of the eye; the cornea) and so one achieves a speedy recovery with the least risk for the eye.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The CATARACT is one of the most frequent causes of vision loss, which, fortunately, can be recovered. It is a pathology of the eye which can affect people of all ages, but which is more common in those over 65, although it can also be present in younger people.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Glaucoma is an eye disease caused by an increase in pressure within the eye, which causes the optic nerve to atrophy and as a result reduce the field of vision, which leads the patient to irreversible blindness if the illness is not controlled. It is commonly referred to as \u201cthe silent blindness disease\u201d.<\/span><\/p>

Early diagnosis and treatment are very important in avoiding serious damage to vision which, when it occurs, is irreversible.<\/span><\/p>

Treatment of glaucoma consists of reducing the ocular pressure to normal levels. The first treatment is always medical and consists of applying one or more types of eye-drops, which attempt to reduce the production of aqueous humour or facilitate its expulsion through the drainage system.<\/span><\/p>

When the drops are insufficient in controlling the ocular pressure, laser treatment can be carried out to attempt to unblock the blocked drains.<\/span><\/p>

When the above treatments fail or, in some cases when the glaucoma is very advanced, we fall back on surgery to create a new escape route. In some cases, however, this too fails and more than one operation is necessary.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is an eye complication of Diabetes Mellitus and is a common cause of blindness in people of working age in industrialized nations.<\/span><\/p>

  • Non-RD: adequate metabolic control and annual check-ups in order to carry out early diagnosis and treatment<\/span><\/li>
  • Initial RD: Control of the ocular fundus every six months<\/span><\/li>
  • Simple RD: Focal photocoagulation using LASER<\/span><\/li>
  • Pre-proliferative RD: pan retinal coagulation<\/span><\/li>
  • Proliferative RD: pan retinal coagulation<\/span><\/li>
  • Vitreous Haemorrhage and Retinal Detachment: the treatment is vitrectomy<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

    The loss of vision in patients with Diabetic Retinopathy can, to a great extent, be avoided, taking into account that it may be present even without symptoms.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

      Floaters or flashers in general are not, in general, an indication of any serious eye problems. If a large number appear or if the problem seems to worsen over time, it is recommended to consult an Ophthalmologist.<\/span><\/p>

      The examination will involve detailed observation of the retina and the vitreous humour. To carry out this examination correctly, medical training and experience are necessary.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

      In the first years of life, any refraction defects should be corrected early with the use of glasses. Early treatment of the pathologies facilitates the child\u2019s social integration and improves academic achievement.         This is an abnormal growth of the conjunctiva which invades the cornea. It is a geographical illness, which is very frequent in equatorial regions and is notably related to solar radiation.<\/span><\/p>
